The Garden

Yayyyyy garden time! A couple weeks ago we had a garden work day to till up the plots and do some pathway maintenance. It was good to be out messing around in the dirt again.

Everyone has been getting early crops planted and preparing the soil for later this month. (below are before and after shots)

A week ago I planted potatoes - which unfortunately have a couple strikes against them. I bought them at the hardware store, but left them in a plastic bag for a few days, which resulted in the sprouts molding. I tried to break all the mold off before cutting them up. Then as I was planting them, it started misting on me, which it was NOT supposed to do. I quickly covered them in hills, and there was minimal precip, so hopefully they will pull through and survive. They are yukon gold, my favorite. I also planted sugar snaps, carrots (orange and yellow), radishes, onions, and a few cabbage plants that a passerby generously gave me. One of my artichoke plants managed to survive the winter, so I'm hoping this summer or fall I'll finally see it produce.

A number of us ordered compost, which arrived last week. As it was delivered in one large dump truck load, we had to fill 8-9 wheelbarrows full and take them to our plot. Fortunately for me, the pile of compost was near my end of the garden. Unfortunately for me, the only time I could do it was during 85+ degree weather. Summer has arrived. The compost is a fabulous chocolatey brown and looks very promising. I've worked some of it in, but hope to go out this week and do some more planting and prep. Yay garden!

We have a compost bin going as well, but I don't think it has broken down in time to use on the garden. I'm with you - planting a little early this year and hoping it won't freeze!
